(FOUNDED 1965)
About the League

The Hartlepool Sunday Football League was formed in 1965.  We currently have 36 teams playing in three divisions, including clubs from Blackhall and Greatham.  The league is represented in the FA Sunday Cup, with Lion Hillcarter being a previous winner in this competition.  Rovers FC represented the league in the 2004-05 & 2006-07 Durham FA Sunday Cup Finals.

The season starts with the Arthur Gibbon Memorial Shield, with the League champions playing the John Dowson Memorial Cup winners (or runner-up if League / Cup winner is the same team). We also stage five cup competitions through the season: John Dowson Memorial Cup,Steven Tierney Memorial Cup, Colin Lyver Premier Cup, Barry Hogan First Division Cup, Second Division Cup.  Our League Champion also plays the Peterlee & District Sunday League Champion in the Billy Bell Memorial Shield, normally staged during the early part of the season.  In addition, the majority of our clubs enter the Durham FA Sunday Cup.

The league is run by a committee consisting of: Chairman, League Secretary, League Treasurer, Fixture Secretary, Referee Appointmens Secretary, Registrations / Transfers secretary and two other committee members.  Visit 'The committee' page to see the current members, some can also be e-mailed via this website. At the end of the 2005-06 season, John Sotheran, secretary of Throston Wanderers FC was appointed as Honorary President of the league, in recognition of his long service which goes back to our formation.

At present, very little is known about the history of the league, we have received some information regarding its early days. The idea started when two teams were formed, namely Blacksmiths and Fens. These two clubs played every other week. The first Chairman of the league was Arthur Hirst, With Harry Tones taking the role of President and Jim McGreggor as League Secretary.  The first cup was donated to the league by Harry Tones.  The first clubs to compete in the league included the following:  Blacksmiths, Fens, Fire Brigade, Owton Manor, St. Josephs, Seaton, Throston, West Rugby, Woodcutter, these were followed by Dyke House, Stranton, Lion Hotel.  Other clubs to join inculded: Atkinsons, Central, Cerebos, Hospitals FC, Hourglass, Lion Social, Mowbray, Red Admiral, Throston Athletic, Travellers

Our League Chairman has recently discovered a couple of fixture books from, the 1967-68 and 1979-80 seasons, which also include a list of league and cup winners. Go to the 'Early Handbooks' page for more on this. We are looking for more information on the history of the league, from its formation, original member clubs, history of cup winners etc..etc..
